So, you’ve landed in our beautiful “Rain City,” or maybe you’re a local planning a weekend getaway to Whistler or the Okanagan. Either way, grabbing a set of wheels in the heart of the city is one of the best ways to see everything British Columbia has to offer. But let’s be honest – navigating the world of rentals in a busy city centre can feel a bit like driving through the Massey Tunnel at rush hour. It’s a lot!
At West Coast Car Rentals, we want your trip to be about the mountain views and the hidden-gem coffee shops, not about squinting at fine print. Here is everything you need to know to hit the road with confidence.

When you’re looking for a car rental downtown Vancouver residents and visitors alike often look for a mix of reliability, price, and – most importantly – location. You’ll find all the big international names like Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis scattered around the downtown core, mostly clustered near major hotels and the Burrard Skytrain station.
While those big names are everywhere, many savvy travellers prefer local independent brands. Why? Because we often provide a more “human” touch. In a busy hub like Vancouver, you want a team that knows the local streets, understands the parking quirks of Gastown, and won’t treat you like just another confirmation number in a massive database.
This is a classic “it depends” situation. Most big-box rental companies will charge a daily fee – sometimes as high as $15 or $20 – to add a second person to the contract. It can really add up if you’re doing a week-long road trip!
However, there are exceptions. In BC, some corporate rates or certain credit card memberships might waive this fee. Here at our desk, we believe sharing the drive makes the trip safer and more fun. We always recommend asking about “additional driver” specials when you book. It’s one of those small details that can save you enough for a few extra rounds of poutine!
Vancouver is a massive tourist destination, especially during the cruise ship season (May to September) and the ski season. If you wait until you’re standing on the sidewalk with your luggage, you’re likely going to pay a “walk-up” premium – if there’s even a car available at all!
To snag the best deal, we recommend booking at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. If you’re visiting during a long weekend or a major event like the Celebration of Light fireworks, aim for 2 months out. Locking in your rate early protects you from the price jumps that happen as the city’s fleet thins out. Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about on your “to-do” list.
Good news: Vancouver is actually a very friendly city for drivers! Unlike some other major metros, we don’t have “congestion charges” for driving into the downtown core. Even better, there are currently no toll bridges in the immediate Lower Mainland. The Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges are now free to cross, which makes exploring the suburbs a breeze.
Just a heads-up on a few local quirks:
We love this city, and we want you to love it too. Whether you need a compact car for zipping around Stanley Park or a sturdy SUV for a trek up the Sea-to-Sky Highway, we’ve got the perfect ride waiting for you.
Our team at West Coast Car Rentals is here to make the process simple, transparent, and totally stress-free. We’ll get you the keys, give you a few local tips, and get you on your way in no time.
